Facebook’s Predictive Analytics – A Love Story

Did you know that Facebook can look at its user’s posting patterns and moods in order to predict their future romantic relationships?

As a posting on the blog FierceBigData put it on February 19, 2014: “‘During the 100 days before the relationship starts, we observe a slow but steady increase in the number of timeline posts shared between the future couple,’ writes Facebook data scientist Carlos Diuk in his ‘The Formation of Love’ post.

‘When the relationship starts (day 0), posts begin to decrease. We observe a peak of 1.67 posts per day 12 days before the relationship begins, and a lowest point of 1.53 posts per day 85 days into the relationship. Presumably, couples decide to spend more time together, courtship is off and online interactions give way to more interactions in the physical world.’ “

Facebook as Cupid?

To put it another way, Facebook knows before you do when you are going to become a couple. It certainly knows long before you announce it on your relationship status.

E7CPQ0CAF6What’s more, Facebook can tell when the physical part of your relationship begins because your online activity decreases. While Facebook diplomatically calls this phase “courtship” in the posts, but in reality the courtship actually occurred during the exchanges Facebook initially traced to accurately predict the relationship.

What value does tracking the love life of its users have for Facebook? Plenty! This information can be used to promote placement of marketing for everything from flowers to chocolates to condoms to lubricants and any other company that can profit from your being involved in a romantic and physical relationship.

Predicting Breakups

Facebook also can predict when your relationship is going to end – often before you do.

QP0MWVJ4LLIn a Facebook posting called “When Love Goes Awry,” which was published on the site on the day after Valentine’s Day, 2014, Facebook data scientist Adrien Figgeri wrote: “To conclude this week of celebrating love and looking at how couples blossom on Facebook, we felt it was important not to forget that unfortunately sometimes relationships go south and people take different paths in life. In this context, we were interested in understanding the extent to which Facebook provides a platform for support from loved ones after a breakup.”

“To that end, we studied a group of people who were on the receiving end of a separation, i.e. who had been in a relationship for at least four weeks with someone who then switched their relationship status to Single.”

“For every person in this group, we tracked a combination of the number of messages they sent and received, the number of posts from others on their timeline, and the number of comments from others on their own content, during a period starting a month before the separation to a month after.

“We observed a steady regime around the baseline before the day of the relationship status changes, followed by a discontinuity on that day with a +225% increase of the average volume of interactions which then gradually stabilize over the course of a week to levels higher to those observed pre-breakup.”

To translate, Facebook can accurately predict when your relationship is going to end long before you suspect anything is wrong. And you can be sure Facebook is using similar analysis to predict other intimate details about your life as well.

Facebook and the Possibilities of Big Data

Most people have no idea about Facebook’s date collection activities and data usage practices. Even if they have heard about it, they generally don’t care or see it as little more than a harmless annoyance.

They mistakenly believe that as long as they don’t post anything of a highly personal or sensitive nature on their wall, Facebook’s practices can’t cause any harm to them.

Facebook isn’t alone in conducting wide scale data harvesting. In fact, most corporations do it to some degree or another these days. While some of these efforts are indeed harmless, some are not. What’s worse, at this point nobody knows how this data will be utilized in the future, or to whom it will be sold and for what purposes it is being purchased.

Most people are legitimately concerned about the potential dangers of the government collecting large amounts of data on them, but they are blind to the dangers of private corporations doing the same thing.

This is a perfect example of how limited perception based on an individual’s personal experience can cause ambiguity in the discussion of big data within and organization.

But Facebook’s use of data offers an excellent opportunity to illustrate what is possible with big data, as well as what some of the potential dangers to privacy are. It can broaden the thinking of people at every level within your organization.

The Future of Google Search Engine Rankings

Because everyone is now plugged into the Internet, the way people communicate with each other is faster than ever.

0E0M5W9O3VTexting is immediate. Using a social signal to indicate preference is quicker than word of mouth. This type of instant approval has had a profound impact on online marketing. It has killed backlink marketing and put email marketing on life support.

T2P4MN3LQ2Today’s Internet users – especially younger users – process shorter burst of information more quickly and tend to have much shorter attention spans. As technology improves and speeds get even faster, this trend will only continue in the future.

Backlink Overkill

While backlinks are still helpful in building your sites rankings – especially when they come from authoritative or expert sites – they are aren’t nearly as important as they once were. A decade ago, the number of backlinks a site had was the primary measure of its relevance to Google search engines.

But unethical web users effectively ruined this for everybody by creating commercial and black-hat SEO methods that artificially increased the number of backlinks a particular site had. Google’s Panda and Penguin updates to its search engine algorithm at the beginning of this decade were designed to counteract these inorganic SEO techniques.

Social Approval Signals

After backlinks essentially became corrupted, Google’s search engine development team turned to social approval signals as a more natural, organic way of measuring a web page’s popularity.

While there are still plenty of black hat methods people use to artificially inflate the amount of social signals a site receives – such as creating fake Facebook pages or purchasing “Likes” or “+1s” on Fiverr.com – Google’s search engine is better equipped to detect bot-produced Tweets and other phony social media recommendations.

PRQVLFBST1It also gives more weight to social signals from those social media users who are the most active and who have the largest social networks.

A website’s page ranking now depends on its ability to get visitors to “vote” for the site by promoting it on their social media pages or to their social media contacts. As a result, it’s critical that web page owners make it as easy as possible for page visitors to share pages or give social approval signals.

You should always include buttons on your pages that allow visitors to instantly link them to their Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus accounts, as well as to social bookmarking sites such as Digg, Pinterest and StumbleUpon.

If you use WordPress or another popular page-creation site, you can use free drag-and-drop plug-ins to include these buttons on your website. Make sure you display them prominently near the top of the page so that visitors can click on them faster and more easily because not all visitors will scroll all the way to the bottom of your web page.

Google +

Recognizing how improvements to internet access have increased the importance of social media, Google is taking aim at Facebook and Twitter and is positioning Google Plus to be the premier social media site in the years to come.

Google+ has more applications to businesses as well as to individuals than most other social media platforms. It’s “Circles” method of grouping contacts lends itself easily to marketing toward specific groups of customers. And Google’s purchase of YouTube, the world’s most popular video sharing site, makes the company the web’s top provider of video, the fastest-growing content delivery format in the world.

While Facebook and Twitter continue to be important, your social media marketing programs in the coming years need to include Google+ because it is poised to be the most important social media site in the future.

Google has slowly and carefully rolled out its newest features and has yet to devote its full considerable resources to properly marketing the service. But Google+ has all the tools it needs to become the premier social media site on the internet.

How to Build Websites for Free

People are often intimidated by building their own websites, because they think you need to know a lot about writing code, graphic interfaces, and other technical issues.

art 2That may have been the case a decade or so ago, but today, anybody can build their own website quickly and for free, once they know a few tricks of the trade.
When you use the free tools and theme templates available at open-source sites like WordPress, building a high-quality website is easy.

“Open source” means that anybody can use it and you don’t have to pay to use its tools. WordPress is very easy to use and even has hundreds of free tutorial videos you can watch that show you how to do every step.

WordPress has thousands of premade “themes,” which are website templates that you can use for free starting right away. It also offers paid themes.

Another benefit of WordPress is that it has a lot of free plug-ins that you can drag and drop onto your website, including such things as creating automated links to your Facebook, Twitter, and other social media pages, polls, and other desirable additions to your web pages.

Plus, WordPress makes it super easy to add photos, images, video, and audio recordings to your website. And you don’t even need to know anything about HTML or CSS code writing. If you can drag and drop, you have all the skills you need to create a high-quality, professional-looking website.

D9AE3D6D9AGetting Started with WordPress

The first thing you need to do is create an account with WordPress. It’s free and only takes a few minutes. All you really need is an email address, and you are ready to go.

Go to the WordPress home page and click on the “Get Started” button. Here you can set up your free account and choose a name for your website. You will be sent an email with a link that activates your WordPress account. Now you are ready to build your page.

Whenever you log into WordPress, you will automatically be brought to your Dashboard. This is the place where you create new web pages, choose themes, add new features, and do everything else you need to build and maintain your website pages.

On the left-hand side of your Dashboard, there are a set of buttons you use to create your settings, make changes, and add new elements to your website. The first couple of times you use WordPress, you’re going to want to take the time to learn about these tools by watching the free tutorial videos that explain how to use them.

Creating Your First Web Page

To build your first new web page on WordPress, click on the “Posts” button on your Dashboard, and then click on “Add New.” This automatically generates a new page.

There’s a space for the headline or title and a box underneath for your content. You will also find different icons that perform various functions, including using different typefaces, bullet points, adding links, and adding images and other media.

WordPress will automatically save drafts as you build your web page. Or you can click on the “Save Draft” button. To see what your page will look like to visitors, click on the “Preview” button at any time. When you are happy with the final version of your web page, click on the “Publish” button, and your web page will instantly be posted to your server.

You can edit or modify your web page anytime you want, even after you have posted it online. Changes are automatically updated, so anybody who goes to your page will only see the latest version. You also can delete portions of your website, or even the entire web page itself, any time you want.

See You at the Top! (of Google Results)

I’m working on improving my ranking, so I thought you maybe interested too! If you want to succeed in business, it’s absolutely critical that you keep your website ranked on the front page of Google, Bing and other search engines for your niche’s best keywords.

That’s because universal internet access and the widespread use of affordable access devices like smartphones and tablets has made search engines the number one way consumers seek out goods and services, especially at the local level.

With Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs), if you can capture one of three top spots, or at least land on Page 1, your business is essentially guaranteed to succeed. But if land on any other page, it is highly unlikely that potential customers will ever find you.
aim high

In fact, about 11%of people will click only on the link posted in the Number One spot of the Google SERP for whatever they are searching for. And about 70% will never go beyond the front page. So that means if you website is ranked on Page 2, Page 3, or any other page besides the front page, seven out of ten of your potential customers are never going to see your website.

Similarly, if your link isn’t in the Number One spot on the Google SERP for your keywords, you are going to lose a minimum of your potential customer base. So you can see how critical it is for your website to be posted on the first page at least, and in the top spot at best.

The Google Algorithm Updates

Just when most Internet marketers had Search Engine Optimization figured out, Google changed the ways its algorithm ranks pages.

In August 2011, it launched its Panda search engine algorithm which shifted the primary ranking tool from backlinks to social signals. That shift was reaffirmed when Google’s Penguin update was introduced in April 2012.

In the post-Penguin internet landscape, therefore, web page owners are better served by designing their Search Engine Marketing (SEM) efforts around encouraging people on social media to link to and approve their pages, rather than focusing most of their time creating backlinks, which are still useful but no longer of primary importance.

LSI Keywords

Including the optimal number of keywords related to your niche – 2% to 4% — is important to improving your Google ranking. But the Penguin update now looks Latent Semantic Indexing Keywords (LSIs). That’s basically a fancy way of saying synonyms.

Google also now gives preference to web pages that flow more organically. Pages that are optimally saturated with synonyms for the keyword rank better than those stuffed with the same keyword that is used over and over again.

Visitor Behavior

Another big change is how Google’s search engine measures the behavior of your page’s visitors once they arrive there. It looks at things like how long the average visitor stays on your page, how frequently they return, the click-through rate, and surf patterns. Another important factor is the bounce rate, which is how many visitors click away from your page after only a second or two. A high bounce rate tells Google a page has lower quality.

Your bounce rate will be higher if visitors don’t find what they are looking for when they arrive on your site, or if they find your content to be dull and uninteresting. Bounce rate also will spike if your content is the same they can find everywhere else.

Pages that have audio or video that starts automatically tend to cause visitors to click off right away, especially if they are viewing the page at their workplace. Many marketers who don’t understand this simply dynamic are shooting themselves in the foot by including instant play video or audio on their web pages. The moment their video or audio starts to play, their potential customers are gone.

Reducing Bounce Rate

Two of the best techniques for decreasing our bounce rate are to make it easier for high-target visitors to find your page and to create high-value content. Look at the keywords that are attracting your page’s visitors: Are they the best ones? If not, users who arrive and don’t find what they want will bounce, negatively affecting your SERP rank.

How to Find High-Quality Blogs to Send You Traffic

The object of guest blogging is to reach the broadest possible audience. So you don’t want to post guest blogs on just any random blog. What you are looking for are the biggest, most popular and most influential blogs in your niche.

If you have been blogging for a while or are a regular reader of blogs, you may already have an idea of which blogs fall into this category. What you are looking for are blogs that are “household words” in your niche subject.

For example, in the field of US politics, Talking Points Memo is one of the most widely-read blogs in Washington, D.C. So if you are seeking to target politics junkies, publishing a guest post on that blog would put your in front of an enormous audience.

If your niche is fashion, getting a guest blog on The Sartorialist would be highly desirable. In film criticism, convincing a noted film critic to let you submit a guest blog on his web page would be a major victory.

Tapping into the Blogging Community

bloggingRegardless of which niches you choose, in all likelihood there already is a thriving blogging community. Given the immense popularity of blogging, there are already established, veteran bloggers writing about nearly every subject imaginable.

Interacting with members of your niche’s blogging community has a number of benefits. First, nobody knows better which blogs in your niche are the most influential than the rabid fans of your niche. Ask them. Leave comments on their blog pages or look at their About page to find their email address and send them a personal message.

Another benefit of interacting with other bloggers – and readers of blogs – within you niche is building your reputation, especially if you have expertise you can bring to the blogging community.

talking to a crowdWhile there are millions of blogs worldwide, within your niche subject matter is probably is a very small world after all. When you nurture relationships with key people within your blogging community, you can call on them for referrals and recommendations, ask them to provide testimonials for you, and encourage them to promote your reputation to other influential bloggers.

Using Search Engines

In the Internet Age, the critical information you need is always just a mouse click away. Run a Google search for “Most influential [Your blog niche] blogs” or “Most popular [Your blog niche] blogs” and you are bound to get hundreds of leads you can pursue.

You also can search for “search operators”, which are terms that are used to narrow or broaden a search. These include such words as “and”, “or” or “not”. For example, when searching for guest blogging opportunities within your niche keyword, your search could include:

  • Keyword + “Submit a guest post”
  • Keyword + “write for us”
  • Keyword + “Become a guest writer”
  • Keyword “guest blogger”
  • Keyword “guest post”
  • Keyword “guest article”
  • Keyword “guest column”
  • Keyword “become a contributor”
  • Keyword “contribute to this site”
  • Keyword “write for us”
  • Keyword “write for me”
  • Keyword inurl: guest

Another option is to use a link prospecting tool such as BuzzStream. This is a website that makes it easy to find other bloggers within your niche, build relationships with them, and keep track of your interactions with them.

Within Buzzstream, you can set up prospecting profiles you can use to organize your blog contacts any way you like, such as by topic, home country or keyword. The site also will provide you with URLs you can follow to check out the blogs further.

Best Places to Find High Value Blogs

Another option is to go blogs within your niche that you enjoy or find useful and see if they list a “blogroll” in the margin. Many bloggers include a list of other blogs that they like on their own blog so that their fans can link to them.

If you know a blog is authoritative, has a lot of regular readers and frequently gets a lot of social approval signals, it’s a good bet that the blogs they recommend have a similar status.

Another great way to find high value blogs is Technorati. This is a blog directory that keeps track of the biggest blogs in nearly every niche. It categorizes blogs by niche, topic and keywords and includes a simple search tool that makes it easy to quickly identify the biggest and most influential blogs within your niche.

Using Traditional Media to Promote Your Online Business or Website

Press releases are short documents that are sent to news organizations to promote some kind of newsworthy event or development. They can be a good way to promote your website as long as the “hook” upon which your press release is built is genuinely newsworthy, and not just an advertisement.

The editors at newspapers, television and radio stations, and online newswires are always looking for content to fill their news hole. If you can create a professional-looking press release that newsworthy information, there is a good possibility that it can be picked up and it could result ina news story.

There are numerous only presMDPH9W0UR7s release distribution sites that will send your press release to news organizations in your region or even nationally or internationally. Most are paid, but some are free

Before you create your news release, make sure it is in the standard format for press releases. Editors look at hundreds each day, and if yours makes it difficult for them to glean the essential information quickly, it may be discarded without being read.

Also, be sure that what you are promoting is newsworthy and can serve as the starting point for a news story. Make sure to include contact information, such as your phone number, so they can call for an interview.

Free Classified Ads

Most people read classified ads to find used cars, apartments for rent, help wanted postings, and the like. But it is possible to promote your website using free classified ads if you know a few tricks.

Generally, websites offering free classified ads – such as Kenda.com or WebClassifieds.us –won’t let you post ads that promote a business or website unless you purchase a paid ad. But if you write your classified ad so that it offers something of value for free, then you can usually get them published.

For example, let’s say you own website that promotes dog training courses. While you probably couldn’t get a free classified that blatantly tries to sell your products, you could post one that says:

“Learn five secret techniques to turn a bad puppy into a good dog. Get your free report at PuppyPartners.com.”

Then you simply create a short report or brief eBook, offer it on your webpage to people who give you their email address and not only will your free classified ad drive visitors to your site, but you can build a subscription list of potential customers that you can use to market other products in the future.

Free marketing sometimes requires taking some creative liberties.

Newsletters

0E0M5W9O3VNewsletters are short reports containing one or more article that are distributed according to a regular schedule, usually monthly, to a group of subscribers who have signed up to receive them because they are interested in the newsletter’s niche topic.

There are two ways to promote your website for free using newsletters: Including links to your website on somebody else’s newsletter or creating your own. The latter probably is the more valuable.

Most newsletter distributors will allow you to include a link to your web page in their newsletter for a fee. This is called a solo ad and if the newsletter is popular enough, it can be one of the best ways to quickly build a customer base.

If you can’t afford to buy a solo ad, some newsletter distributors may let you submit an article for inclusion in their newsletter in which you include a link to your website.

Offering a subscription to a free newsletter is a great way to build your email subscriber list, then creating and distributing a free newsletter of your very own. Although this requires a larger time investment because you probably will have to create all the content on your own, the reward is that you can quickly build a list of dedicated and loyal subscribers.

These enthusiastic fans can then promote your website to their friends, family, members of their social networks, and other people who are interested in your subject niche.

The 7 Dirty Words of Internet Marketing

George Carlin – may he rest in peace – talked about 7 words you can’t say on TV. Well, this article is going to tackle the 7 dirty words of Internet marketing. You want to disassociate yourself from these as much as you can, if you know what is good for you.

Number 7, and one of my favorites, is “buy.” You NEVER want to tell people to BUY your book or whatever the heck it is you’re selling. Buying means you’re spending money on it, and people do NOT want to spend money … on ANYTHING.

So you want to stay away from this word at all costs. Try something like “claim” or “immediately download.” This will make them think they’re getting it for nothing.

Number 6 really applies mostly to the IM make money online niche … “earn.” You NEVER want to tell people that they can EARN money online. Earning makes is sound like there is work involved. It’s hard to earn. You want to use words like “passively acquire an income” or something like that. Make it sound easy.

Number 5 sounds like “earn” but has an extra letter at the beginning. The word is “learn.” You NEVER want to tell somebody that they’re going to LEARN something. Learning is what you did in school and it’s NOT easy. Nobody wants to learn. They want the info to magically appear in their head as if by some genie.

Number 4 is something only a dope would use when talking about their own site. The word is “scam.” When people think of a scam, they think of something illegal.

And the truth is, almost all scams ARE illegal. This is such a dirty word, you only want to use it when talking about somebody ELSE’S site. Just make sure you can prove it, unless you want to end up with a lawsuit on your hands.

Number 3 is something a lot of marketers just don’t get. It’s “spam.” This is the bane of our existence. Spammers have made Internet marketers’ lives a living hell on Earth. Because of spam, we have more regulations than we know what to do with … all of which only make marketing that much more of a pain in the arse.

Number 2 is “Ponzi.” Remember the old Ponzi schemes from way back? Well, believe it or not, they are still around and still getting shut down every single day. The last thing you want is to be associated with one of these schemes. There is only one word dirtier than “Ponzi.”

Number 1 may be the dirtiest word in all of Internet marketing. It’s the one thing that nobody wants to do. They’d rather eat bugs than do this. The word is “work.” Nobody wants to work. They just want to sit back, push a button, and watch the money fall from the sky. So never, under ANY circumstances, put on your website for your product that the prospect will have to WORK in order to see any results.

Okay, the above was a little fun for a change of pace. However, there is a lot of truth in what I’ve said. Remember it if you want to be a successful Internet marketer to avoid these 7 dirty words.

3 Easy Tools You Can Use to Build Highly Effective Landing Pages for Your Online Business

Do you know that, Creating effective landing pages is the first step in setting up your sales funnel. Once you can produce high-quality designs that convert quickly, you are ready to take the next step in setting up your Internet marketing business platform.

Get the Facts

How important are landing pages to sales funnels. Consider these statistics:

  • 68% of Business-to-Business (B2B) companies use landing pages to generate new sales leads
  • Business that have between 31 to 40 landing pages attract 700% more leads than businesses that have only 1 to 5 landing pages.
  • Businesses that have more than 40 different landing pages attract 1,200% more leads than those with only 1 to 5 landing pages.

Always Be Landing

sedona landingKeep in mind that every web page is essentially a landing page. Your web pages are the core of your sales funnel. So when you are building your online business, you need to consider using the following tools and services in order to get the results you want.

Of course, you could just strike out on your own and do it all yourself, using trial and error and trying to push you way up the learning curve. But that is going to take you two to five times longer. And then when you figure out that what you are doing isn’t working, you may have more flexibility, but you will also have less agility than your competitors.

Or you can use existing tools that will do the job for you without the effort, stress or worry. Plus, they can create your better, high-converting landing pages much faster than you probably could do on your own.

Tools for Creating Landing Pages

There are many different websites and other tools you can use that will automatically create landing pages for you. Some are great while others are terrible.

Here is a list of three of the best ones.

Instapage

This page builder comes with a free trial offer. After that, it costs about $14/month, depending what you want to use it for.

Instapage is extremely user-friendly and instinctual. It also offers built-in A/B testing. Plus, it can integrate seamlessly with our website domain. Plus it has a WordPress plug-in, which is very helpful if you are using this open source site to build your web pages.

LeadPages

LeadPages has a large selection of pre-made, high-converting templates that you can start using right away. This comes at the cost of not having as much control over the design of your pages. But if they convert and make you money, who cares?!

Another benefit is that LeadPages allows you to roll out new landing pages very quickly. You just plug in your unique copy and go. Like Instapage, LeadPages also uses a WordPress plug-in. Bonus!

Petovera

Here you will find custom-made sales funnel and landing page design services. Petovera produces high-quality custom landing pages rather than pre-made templates.

You tell them what you want and they will tailor your pages for you based on your objectives and brand message. They have an award-winning team of writers who can handle all of your content creation.

Obviously, you have to pay dearly for this service. But if you have more capital than time, it’s often a good investment.
